I finished the Sermon for Haughton–le–Skerne: had an interview with Mr Merrifield, the Rector of Etherley, who "can't make both ends meet"!; walked in the snow for an hour with George N.: wrote to John Lawrence, who is in Italy: and "frivolled" the evening with my family which was reinforced for the occasion by Jimmie Dobbie. Knowlden, the Vicar of St Aidan's, West Hartlepool, is reported to be seriously ill, so seriously that even if he recovers, he will be inadequate to more than a fraction of the work he has been carrying on.
