I finished the sermon for York Minster. After lunch I motored in to Durham, & fetched out Sir Richard Lodge, who has been examining. We walked & talked in the Garden & Park. He disclaims any sympathy with the spiritualistic opinions of his brother, Sir Oliver Lodge, and agrees that "Raymond" is sad twaddle: but he assures me that his brother retains undiminished his mental acuteness in his down department of science. We certainly need a more careful study of the limits within which eminent men can properly claim weight for their opinions. Outside those limits they may be wholly underserving of regard.
