I wrote letters all the morning, among them one to the Archbishop of Canterbury . Mr Hicks, the Churchwarden of St John's Monkheseldon, came to lunch, & stayed all the afternoon! A dull ignorant fellow, very vain of his knowledge of ecclesiastical matters which reflected a continued and loving study of parish magazines! The evening paper reported the death of Canon Martin, vicar of Kelloe. This places another honorary canonry at my disposal, and gives me the patronage of another well–endowed benefice. I motored to Whickham, & put up for the night in the Rectory, where the Rural Dean and Mrs Little received me most kindly.
