Tuesday, December 27th, 1921.

The following books were given to me on Christmas Day:

1. The Pilgrim, Essays on Religion by T.R. Glover.

2. Life of Bishop Percival, by William Temple.

3. Life of Robert, Marquis of Salisbury by Lady Gwendolin Cecil.

4. Spanish Islam by Reinhart Dozy, translated by F.G. Stoker.

5. Annals of the Church of Scotland by Sir Thomas Raleigh.

6. Essays & Studies by Members of the English Association.

The weather was stormy and wet. I remained in my room all day, save when I joined my family at meals. In the morning I worked at a sermon. In the afternoon & evening I read through the first volume of Lady Gwendolin Cecil's Life of her father. It is one of the ablest biographies I have read. She analyzes Lord Salisbury's character with astonishing acuteness.
