I worked at revising and adapting an old sermon for use next Sunday when I preach to the Wesleyans of Sunderland. After lunch Clayton and I motored to Durham, where I presided at a meeting of the Clerical Maintenance Board, and afterwards saw a lad, Gwilliam, the son of the Vicar of Heworth, to whom there had been made a grant of £50. to assist him in preparing for Ordination. He is not yet 18 years old, and is about to matriculate at Durham. Then I had tea with the Bishop of Jarrow, and Mrs Quirk. He was so far convalescent as to be sitting up, eating heartily, and talking with much animation. Then William joined me with the car, & we returned to Auckland. I resumed work on the sermon, and finished it before dinner. Gouldsmith tells me that the third parson, Frost, is making mischief at Sunderland, & that I must prepare for ^[illegible]^.
