I spent the whole morning at the Shire Hall, where the inquiry into the Jarvis Trust was in process. Mr Barker from the Board of Education presided, and there was a full attendance. Nield, the Leominster Quaker, wasted more than an hour in developing is [sic] oft–rejected scheme for establishing a Rural Secondary School at Staunton–on–Wye. Finally we gave a general approval to Dr Maples's scheme. Osman & Compston lunched here. Bannister came to report so much difficulty in arranging hospitality for the members of the Diocesan Conference that he counselled postponing the session. I undertook to write a letter to the members of the Diocesan Conference announcing the postponement. I sent copies of the Strike Sermon to the following:– Bishops of Peterborough, Worcester, Bristol, & Norwich, Bell the Archbishop's Chaplain, Temple, Barnes, Archdeacon Spooner, Frank Pember, my brothers Frank & Arthur, & Professors Dicey & Bonney.

Beatty, in whose parish a number of railway men are living reports that some of them are very angry with the Bishop for his Strike–sermon! Two anonymous letters of protest appear in the local Radical newspaper, but they are ill–expressed and unimpressive compositions. I think the men are startled at anything virile and relevant coming from the lips of a Bishop, & disposed to resent it as almost indecent!
