I read through Hugh Cecil's "Nationalism & Catholicism". It is well–written, acute, and sophistical like all his work. Loisy's "Guerre et Religion" suggests itself as a contrast.

Both writers are concerned with the same theme, but how different is their treatment! Prebendary Machen made the statutory declarations, & stayed to lunch. I wrote many letters, sawed wood for an hour, attended a meeting of the 'Emergency' Committee, had three interviews. Ernest re–appeared, having come from Oxford, where he meditates entering as a student in Wycliffe Hall.
