I left Edinburgh by the 10 a.m. express. Willie Murray turned up at the station, & talked to me for 20 minutes before the train started. The journey was uneventful. I drove in a sorrowful hansom to Garland's hotel, and then made my way to the Athenaeum, where I dined. The Bishop of Carlisle came and sate at my table – a de–appetising companion!
