The rain mingled with snow fell heavily most of the morning. It snowed during the night. It is announced in the "Times" that Arthur Headlam has been appointed Regius Professor at Oxford in succession to Scott Holland. I wrote a number of letters: visited the barber, and the book–seller: lunched in the Athenaeum, where Matheson shared my table, and finally addressed myself to preparing for my function in the Bloomsbury Chapel. The detestable weather kept many people away, but the building was at least two–thirds filled at 4 p.m. when I preached. Shakespeare conducted the service, and Dr Clifford was on the platform. Later I returned to the place for the meeting. The Chapel was almost full. My speech was half an hour in delivery, & was a poor confused thing. I said that I wished to make clear to everybody that as bishop I intended to pursue the object which I had pursued in less exalted positions.
