4th Sunday in Advent, December 23rd, 1917.

I did not leave the house all day, my cold being heavy upon me. So I went through the growing mass of letters, & selected those which call most evidently for immediate answer. I find that 30 bishops, of whom 19 are diocesan, have written to me in terms of "congratulation". Their letters vary in warmth of tone, but all must at least imply that the writers think me not grossly unfit for the office.
