1174th day

I left Durham by the early express, & travelled comfortably to London. Last night there was a raid with Zeppelins. A bomb fell in Piccadilly Circus and did damage both to life & property. I drove to Dean's Yard and deposited my bags in 4 Little Cloisters. Then I walked to the Athenaeum, & spent the time there until 5 p.m. Charles was in the Club. We walked back to Westminster together. The air–raids are now so frequent, and this place is so fully in the line of danger, that the probability of having to take refuge in the Undercroft during the night has to be taken into consideration in making one's arrangements for the night. It is not considered prudent to divest one's self completely of one's ambulatory garments, but to sleep more or less in active trim!
