Wednesday October 3rd, 1917.

1157th day

The weather has changed for the worse, clouded and at eventide wet. After much waste of time in futile thinking I decided to preach on the "Duty of Hope", as Dicey recommends. I attended Mattins & Evensong. We motored to Lumley, & dined with Lady Londonderry. It was a pleasant dinner party – Lady Ilchester, General & Mrs Montgomery, Mr & Mrs Dillon, Mr & Mrs Pemberton, Miss Christopher & ourselves. Also a local curate, Harrison. We got back to the Deanery by 11.30 p.m.
