1094th day

The weather has broken, and is now chilly, damp, & blustering. From the front a fresh offensive is reported, while the débâcle of the Russians continues. I followed out my normal programme. Before breakfast I read the Gifford Lectures. I attended Mattins, & then wrote a sermon for next Sunday. I attended Evensong, paid wages, walked for an hour with Cruickshank, worked at the Warden's Journal, dined, read "Bleak House", and finally wrote letters. I wrote to Gamble urging him not to yield to the 'war–weariness' which has evidently overtaken him.
