Before getting up I read a little book which is said to be attracting some attention – "Red Cross & Iron Cross" by a Doctor in France! It is, perhaps, too elaborately finished to be convincing, but it is horribly powerful. The task of preparing a sermon for next Sunday afternoon grows nowise easier as I bring myself to face it. I sate & looked at my paper for an immense while, & finally gave up the attempt in despair.
