I worked at the Edinburgh sermon: attended Evensong: walked with Logic: watered the garden: and read Disraeli's Life. The afternoon post brought me an affectionate letter from Ernest.

The "Times" announces that Carnegie has been appointed Chaplain to the House of Commons in succession to Wilberforce. When I was Rector of St Margaret's I desired this position greatly: and, if I had possessed it, I don't think anything would have taken me away from Westminster. But there was no vacancy during my Rectorship.
