610th day

Glorious sunshine, and an Italian atmosphere. No Zeppelins are reported last night. I received the Holy Commn at 8 a.m. Bishop Quirk celebrated. I wrote to Sir Lewis Dibdin inquiring what law determined the preaching obligations of Canons in Residence. Then I started on a sermon but made little progress. I attended Evensong. Lady Londonderry (the Dowager) & Lady Boyne came to tea, & perforce I wasted an hour in their company. After dinner we sate in my study, and I read selections from the poets – Rupert Brooke, Rabindranath Tagore, Matthew Arnold, Sir Alfred Lyall, Austin Dobson – a strange collection, but all very good at their best.
