595th day

A very wet miserable morning. Ernest went off by the early train, & I went into the Cathedral to Celebrate the Holy Communion. I succeeded in finishing Warburton on Neal, one of the most futile labours I have ever embarked upon. Mr Collier, a curate of St Margaret's in this City, & erstwhile a Bible–clerk of All Souls, lunched with me. He had been commended to me by Cholmondeley. Not an ill–looking youth, but plainly bitten by the newest sacerdotalisms. How long will it be before my poor Ernest informs me that he too is a "Catholick"?

I shewed the letters which I had composed to the Architect and Contractor of Langley House, anent the scandalous defective work there, both to Bishop Quirk & to Wilson, & at their suggestion made some small changes. Then I copied, and despatched them. Our pious Mayor's ears should be made to tingle!
