578th day
I furnished the Judges Sermon, & then betook myself to the paper on Warburton. This grows more tiresome daily. I walked after lunch, and attended Evensong. We dined with Knowling. Old Canon Fowler was their [sic], deafer than ever. The "Record" contains a brief notice of "War–time Sermons", not unfriendly but the writer had evidently read nothing more than the introduction! I received a telegram form the Editor of the "Guardian", asking for the Sermon on Sunday: I sent back a message that it should be sent. Here is a list, placed in order of seniority of the Prebendaries of Durham in the year 1755, when Warburton was appointed:–
1. | Sir John Dolben | appointed in | 1718 | died in | 1756 |
2. | John Johnson | " | 1726 | " | 1761 |
3. | Thomas Sharp | " | 1732 | " | 1758 |
4. | William Knatchbull | " | 1738 | " | 1760 |
5. | Henry Bland | " | 1737 | " | 1768 |
6. | James Gisburn | " | 1742 | " | 1759 |
7. | Robert Stillingfleet | " | 1743 | " | 1759 |
8. | Thomas Chapman | " | 1750 | " | 1760 |
9. | Joseph Spence | " | 1754 | " | 1768 |
10. | William Warburton | " | 1755 | " | 1779 |
11. | Jacques Sterne | " | 1755 | " | 1759 |
12. | Robert Lowth | " | 1755 | " | 1787 |
The Dean was the Hon & Revd Spencer Cowper, appointed in 1746. The Bishop was Richard Trevor, who had succeeded Butler in 1752, &, though neither great nor learned, was successful and popular. He reigned until 1771.
