571st day
The Bishop of Newcastle (Dr Wild) and his wife came to lunch, and afterwards went round the Abbey with me. It appears that we met them in Hutton's rooms some few years since: but I have no clear recollection of the fact, though the occasion is in my mind. He is a less imposing man than I had assumed him to be, & hardly gives me the impression of strength. However he drank claret, & it requires something more than common courage for a clergyman to do that now! Mrs Wild (erstwhile Miss Severn) seems an agreeable lady. She protests, I trust truly, that she has no liking for, & no ability for, public speaking. The whole race of prating priest–women is hateful to me.
Mr John Bailey called to see the Deanery, and I showed him round. He says that his wife is a sister of Mrs Alington.
