The Times publishes my letter under the heading, devised by itself: "The Nation & Total Abstinence. Disappointed Zealots". It reads less savagely than I feared. I started reading Neal's Puritans with a view to the preparation of my paper for the Royal Society of Literature. After lunch I wrote cheques for the Tradesmen's accounts, & then walked with Bayley. Dennett brought the choir–boys for a rehearsal in the Drawing Room. Their keen enjoyment seemed to fill the house.
