492nd day
The morning post brought me a friendly letter from the Archbishop of C. thanking me for a copy of "War–time Sermons": and an affectionate letter from Gilbert who is now in France. I wrote a little sermon for the troops, and revised a sermon for use in S. Nicholas next Sunday evening. After lunch I walked with the Bishop of Jarrow, & then attended Evensong. Then I read through Pilkington's "Confutation of an Addition". Of this treatise also Frere gives a brief summary which is extremely misleading. Pilkington's position is precisely identical with that of Jewel, and both are frankly Protestant.
