I read through Gore's 'Crisis in Church & Nation', of which he had sent me a copy. It is a curious document, disclosing a vehement unbalanced spirit, and a tortuous intellect, its too–facile instrument. After lunch I presided at a meeting of the Cosin's Hospital Trustees, at which an almswoman was selected. Then I walked with Cruickshank, returning in time for Evensong. Mr Knight, the Vicar of Ryhope, called, and had tea. He is unmarried, has been much abroad, and talks incessantly.
