Guy Fawkes Day. Old Cato the cat ended his career with a little assistance from the vet. I accidently burned my braces, & broke my collar–stud. A triplet of disasters, and omens! I spent the day in writing the sermon for Newcastle tomorrow. It is a reply to Loisy's contention that genuine Christianity is incompatible with Christianity [patriotism - ed.]: & seems rather too cold and essay–like for a popular sermon. After lunch I took Logic for a short walk, and afterwards attended Evensong.
