457th day
I spent the morning in bed, and then, after seeing the doctor, got up for lunch. Asquith's two–hours speech in the House and the subsequent speeches gave me matter for reading, & food for thought. I sent a letter to Cruickshank, declining attendance at his deputation, but sympathizing with its objects. Later, Cruickshank came in, and talked awhile. I gather that the shop–keepers are holding aloof in deference to their fellow–traders, the publicans.
