I presided at a Chapter meeting at which we appointed Perkins, a curate of Consett, to Shadforth, and received Caröe in his official capacity. It was reported that 4 or 5 Belgian boys had been sent to the school. I wrote a little sermon for the soldiers tomorrow, paid the house–hold bills & other accounts, answered many letters, attended Evensong, & welcomed the Murray Smiths, who came here for the week–end. Mrs Hodgson Fowler also came in to dinner, groping through a Zeppelin– haunted gloom!
