404th day

Sir John & Lady Struthers left after breakfast. I spent the morning in reading the "History of Freemasonry from its rise down to the present day" by J. G. Findel, translated by C. van Dalen, London 1866", which is said to be the standard book on the subject. I did this with a view to preparing a sermon for the Gateshead Freemasons. It would not be decent for a "Grand Chaplain" to be wholly ignorant of the History of the Society!
