Wednesday, September 8th, 1915.

401st day

The Charnwoods left after breakfast, affirming with their latest breath that they longed to stay! Then I wrote a little sermon for the troops next Sunday. After attending Evensong, I walked for an hour with my wife. The day was a perfect autumnal day, & everything looked ravishingly beautiful. Everything is still sumptuously green, but the yellowing touch of decline is beginning to be felt rather than seen: & it adds an exquisite melancholy to the fair landscape. Lady Struthers arrived about 6 p.m. without her husband who had been detained on educational business in Edinburgh. He arrived about 10.30 p.m.
