The patriotic flame is burning at last in the reluctant bosom of my chauffeur! He asked me this morning for a letter of commendation to the Transport Department, to which he desires to offer his services. I wrote a sermon for next Sunday's occasion. We lunched at Shincliffe with the Soltau–Simmons. I attended Evensong in the Cathedral. After dinner I wrote to Simon interceding for the German husband of Dora Daines, who is interned, to her exceeding distress.
