Ascension Day, May 13th, 1915.

283rd day

There was snow on the ground at day–dawn, but the day was bright. I celebrated at 8 a.m. All the canons were present. Also I attended Evensong, when the Procession went round the Cathedral & through the Nine Altars. After service I saw the Bishop of Durham for a few minutes at Bp Quirk's: & then had tea with the Cruickshanks, & walked with him. The papers have long summaries of the horrifying report of Bryce's Commission on the German Outrages in Belgium & France. Nothing could be more dreadful.
