222nd day
I received a letter from Dibdin, courteously expressed, but not very hopeful, & suggesting that I should talk the matter over with himself & Downing the secretary of the Ecc: Commission. I wired to Pemberton, who came to see me during the morning. He would be willing to accompany me to London if an interview were arranged.
Welldon arrived by the afternoon train, being preceded by Miss Maxwell. To meet them dined here Bishop & Mrs Quirk, Miss Christopher, and a young soldier commended to us by the Mayoress of Sunderland, Lieut: Cox. He is a parson's son from Devonshire, & has five brothers, all now in some capacity serving in the Forces. His own ambition is to be ordained, & this soldiering has broken in on his Cambridge course.
