217th day
In the afternoon we motored to Hartlepool, saw St Hilda's church (where I noticed a tablet with a very flatterous epitaph in honour of the Evangelical Preacher, William Romaine), and such relics of the Bombardment as yet survive, and returned to Durham by the way of Wynyard. It was very cold, but the sun shone, & as we came back there were some very wonderful sunsetting effects. Gee called to see the Watsons. I told him that, if I could be of any service in assisting a peaceful settlement of the law suit between the University & the Charity Commission, I would be willing to do what lay in my power.
