176th day

A sharp frost but yielding later to a thaw which made the roads muddy walking. After Mattins Dennett came into my study, & I told him that the choirboys must have food before they come to Holy Communion at 8 a.m. on Sundays, as it is not seemly that the little fellows should faint in the Cathedral. Also, I told him that I was distressed at the ill report on the Scripture work in the Choir–school; that I would give some "Dean's" Prizes viz: for conduct; 2 for Latin; 2 for Religious Knowledge. Bayley came in to lunch, and afterwards had some speech with me about the Muniments. After lunch I walked with Jim to the top of 'Nine Tree Hill'.
