136th day
The destruction of life & property yesterday was more considerable than was supposed. At the Hartlepools alone 47 killed & more than 150 wounded are reported. It is a very barbarous thing thus to bombard open towns. All accounts attest a praiseworthy absence of panic. Mr Brierley, a curate of South Shields, lunched here. He is the son of the late Vicar of Brigg. Ella went with me to Gateshead, where I addressed a large meeting in the Town–hall in the interest of recruiting. All the speeches were too long, and it was after 11 p.m. before we were back in the Deanery.
