73rd day

I attended Mattins in the Cathedral: & afterwards tried to prepare a sermon for the Doctors at Carlisle: but a fiendish headache hindered me. I wrote a careful letter to the Archbishop of Upsala resigning the lectureship which I had accepted, & giving my reasons. Then I was fetched by Mr Thwaites to see the youth practicing their rifles. As I left the range, the Mayor laid hold of me. He has received intimation of new flights of Belgian refugees, some of whom it is hoped may be established in Durham. The city affords little accommodation.
