Bishop & Mrs Mann left us. I attended Mattins in the cathedral, & then went to the National Relief Ctee at the Shire Hall. Lord Durham, Judge Greenwell, and Mrs Pease came to lunch. Afterwards I returned to the Ctee, & was elected chairman of the Organisations Sub Comtee. I offered to accompany Lord Durham in recruiting expeditions through the county.
I received a very interesting letter from Archbishop Söderblom: he is evidently much impressed by the German view of England's attitude as implying treason against 'culture'. This view has seemed to receive confirmation by the announcement that Indian troops are to be employed in Europe. The Scandinavians are petrified by dread of Russia, & they cannot see beyond the single fact that England is Russia's ally.
George Dennistoun's parents & sister came here in the afternoon to pay a short visit.
Mr Thwaites came to see me. He is an enthusiastic patriot though a Methodist local preacher. Although 39 years old, therefore too old for enlistment, he meditates setting an example to the Methodist youth by himself joining the colours. He impressed me favourably as a sincere enthusiast.
