Wednesday, August 26th, 1914.

A wet day. The Bishop & Mrs Mann abandoned their project of an expedition to Holy Island.

Lillington was installed at Mattins. This is the 2nd canon installed during my decanate.

A telegram from Mother announced that she & Marion had arrived in England, & were proceeding to Birchington. This tidings removes a cloud of painful anxiety.

Mr Somers Clarke, the Architect, an aggressively garrulous little man, called to seek permission to see the cathedral, which I gave him readily enough, and also asked him to lunch. He came in to tea as well: & I shewed him the library.

I attended a meeting of the "Emergency Committee" of the National Relief Fund.

James Parker–Smith arrived just before dinner.

Bishop & Mrs Mann left the Deanery for Newcastle during the afternoon.
