The Caröes went off after breakfast.

At luncheon were our Swedish Teacher, Osborne, Fairbairn, & a young lady whom Ella evolved from nowhere!

Fairbairn came to consult me about taking Orders in the Church of England. He is bred a Presbyterian of the straiter sect, but leans to Anglicanism: but he has been comparatively well educated at Edinburgh & Manchester, & is accustomed to think as well as read. Recent events have made him fearful of what might befall him presently, if he were ordained in a church which numbers Gore, Talbot, & Ingram among its leaders. I could say but little to comfort him.

Bishop Nickson talked over our finance with a view to the large expenditures on the fabric now impending. We have the money: but shall be perilously depleted five years hence.

Ella & I motored to Auckland Castle, & there dined with the Bishop & Mrs Moule. It was the very dullest & dreariest function I have ever had occasion to assist in – & that is saying much! We returned to the deanery about 11 p.m.
