The news arrived of a disastrous shipwreck. That fine steamer. "The Empress of Ireland", in which we returned from Canada five years ago, and went to Canada in 1912, has been in collision, & foundered in the Gulf of St Lawrence. It is said, but probably the number is exaggerated, that 1000 passengers & crew have perished.
After Evensong the clergy & choir ascended the great tower, & sang the customary anthems.
Yesterday we elected the following boys to be King's Scholars:–
- Kirby, Robert Fry. honorary
- Duff, Arnold Mackay £40 per annum
- Wright, James Brown £40 per annum
- Gee, Thomas Richard Douglas £30
- Wattsford. £25.
We arranged that Arthur Morgan, the Chorister, should go to the school as a boarder for a year: & then, if the headmaster reports well of him, should be elected a King's Scholar in 1915. He is clearly below a tolerable standard this year.
