I wrote to Harold, who was 26 yesterday. He asks what he ought to offer for Fleury's Ecclesiastical History! Then we packed our bags, & came away to Edinburgh in order to attend the sessions of the General Assemblies. On arriving we drove at once to 39 Palmerston Place.

We attended a reception given by the out–going Moderator Wallace Williamson. Robertson of Whittingeham & old Dr Mair were very talkative. Kikuyu has greatly excited them, & their own Union debate. Mine host tells me that he thinks this will be a contentious assembly. I asked how far the personnel had changed from last year: he replied that most of the members were new.

After dinner we attended a reception given by our host in the North British Hotel. It was very numerously attended, & very well arranged. I got speech with a good number of my acquaintance. George Adam Smith & his wife promised to stay with us in Durham.
