Monday, May 11th, 1914.

I returned to Durham by an early train. In the afternoon I attended a meeting of the History Committee: & there I was foolishly moved to the folly of promising to give an 'inaugural lecture' next term, when the 'History School' is to make its start. The initial difficulty is to find a subject within my powers & not quite unsuitable for the occasion.
