New Year's Day, January 1st, 1914.

We all went to Church at 8 a.m. & received the Holy Communion. I celebrated. So we begin the New Year with self–dedication to God at the Altar. May His Spirit direct, & his law govern us!

Last night I wrote to the Archbishop a very long letter about Kikuyu, in which I told him that he had the chance of his life, & urged him to make a strong & clear declaration which might cause a secession of the Zanzibaris, & thereby do the Church a great service.

The choirboys came to a party. Dolphin insisted on their going home early, so that it was but a brief affair, but such as it was it seemed to give pleasure.

Olive arrived, and took part in entertaining the Choirboys.
