We were due at a meeting in Hartlepool, but failed to get there through a stupid blunder. We omitted to change trains at Murton: & were just carried back to Durham! There we could obtain no motor, & had to telegraph our inability to keep our engagement. Later we went to Wynyard Park in order to dine & sleep. It was a pleasant party. Balfour was there & Lord Middleton. I took Lady Ilchester in to dinner & found her an interesting & intelligent person. After dinner I had some talk with Gosse.
