Wednesday, October 8th, 1913.

About 8 a.m. a violent thunderstorm accompanied by a tropical deluge of rain broke over Durham. The electrical system of the Deanery was deranged, & had to be repaired forthwith. In the afternoon the river was in spate, rolling down with rapid swirl an immense volume of water. The water–falls on the banks assumed an imposing aspect.

I received from the Archbishop of Canterbury a letter in answer to my refusal to join the Committee for considering the 'representation of the laity'. His Grace evidently wishes me to recall my refusal.

I worked at a sermon for Sunday morning next, when I am pledged to preach in Newcastle to the Lord Mayor & Corporation.
