The weather continues to be favourable, though the sea is perceptibly more disturbed, & the sky is overcast. We did 329 miles the first day, & 376 the second.

I wrote letters on deck most of the day: & after dinner read through Mason's novel "The Broken Road".

At dinner the conversation turned on the treatment of aborigines. The captain expressed himself rather brutally. The reports of the rubber–atrocities in Peru were 'mostly newspaper stuff'. I asked him whether he had read the Blue Book. Of course he had not.

Lord Richard Cavendish is on board. He introduced himself to me as a former member of my congregation. He is rather a mean replica of his brother the Duke. He civilly congratulated me on my appointment to the Deanery, & spoke eulogistically of the house.
