15th Sunday after Trinity, September 24th, 1911. Westminster.
I celebrated in St Margaret's at 8 a.m. 20 comts. There was a very large congregation at Mattins. I made reference to Duckworth in the course of my sermon, and after service the 'Dead March' was played. All was very solemn & sorrowful. Dr Söderblöm came in for the sermon.
After lunch Beeching & I walked to S. Paul's, and heard Simpson, the latest appointed of the Canons, preach a sermon. He is not an amiable person to look at, but he has force, & eloquence. He could be powerful at his best: ordinarily he would tend to be topical & vulgar.
At Evensong S. Margaret's was crowded. I preached an old sermon from the text, "Heaven & Earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away". The Offertory amounted to £8.8.2.
Albert & Edwin Saxton came in to supper. Also Reggie Still & Gilbert. Beeching & Linetta made up the party.
