~~The best person in God's sight is the best amongst his friends: & the best of neighbours near God is the best person in His own neighbourhood.~~
A saying of Muhammad.
A very hot morning in spite of a breeze. I celebrated in S. Margaret's at 8 a.m. There were 20 comts.
In spite of the heat there was a considerable congregation at Mattins. I preached from Psalm 125–1,2: and, in the course of my sermon, spoke with severity of the recent disorder in the House of Commons, when a knot of young Tories, headed by Hugh Cecil, shouted down the Prime Minister. Raleigh was in church, & came in afterwards to lunch.
Angel Colenso came to see me: she was 20 years old on July 20th.
At Evensong there was a large congregation including the Abp of Canterbury & the Master of Trinity. Prof Adams of McGill University and his wife came to supper. Also Edwin Saxton & Wilfrid Hill. Gilbert stayed the night.
