Another brilliant day but tending to heat. I preached in S. Thomas's Church at 11 a.m. from the 8th Psalm, 'What is man? &c': There was a choir of men & young women, all rested in cassock & surplice, the female singers having also small velvet caps.

Mrs Bryce motored us to Arlington, once the residence of Col. Robt Lee; now reserved as a soldiers' cemetery. It is the most beautiful place commanding a noble view of the city.

After tea the Ambassador and I went to the Zoo, and were rewarded with the sight of fine bears & beavers. Here also the place is wonderful. He showed me a steep rock up the face of which the Late President was accustomed to clamber – a rigorous performance.
