2nd Sunday after Christmas, January 3rd, 1909.

A damp morning darkening into fog. Knox celebrated at 8 a.m: but I, still harassed by a heavy cold, did not move out until 11 a.m. Then the congregation was larger than I expected, though, of course not very considerable. I preached on 'Christian Faith', having woven a sermon out of two old ones. I celebrated afterwards when there were just 100 comts. After that I kept to the house, leaving Hine Haycock to preach at Evensong.

On Monday Jany 4th, the Brotherhood dined with Pearce. Beeching, Gow & I drove together to his house. While dinner was in progress he announced that Alexander had been appointed Canon at S. Paul's. This was disappointing, as most of us had tried to secure the appointment of Pearce himself. It is presumably a consolation prize to the Bishop of Hereford.

On Wednesday, the 6th of Jany 1909, we had the S. Margaret's Choirboys for their annual 'Treat'. They came at 5.30 p.m. and went at 10 p.m.; the interval being spent in many games & much hilarity. Hine–Haycock, Knox, & Mary Scott were here to assist us in entertaining them.
