Harry & his sister went their way: and Ella took her journey to Torquay. I had but a hasty parting, as the Canons met in my house to compare notes before the Special Chapter.

The Dean, after Welldon had produced his draft, made a statement. He withdrew his former proposals, and offered no others. We voted an adjournment for half an hour; and then – recalling the Dean – we agreed to post–pone the discussion for 6 months, in order to give him time to pursue investigations; we authorized him to consult an historical expert if he wished; and we ordered the Chapter Clerk to collect the Orders made during the last 100 years respecting divers matters to be dealt with in the Consuetudinary. The Dean displayed an unyielding temper, & was most unconciliatory.
