Admiral Rolfe consented to be my churchwarden in place of Mr Hunt. After lunch I went over the roofs of the Abbey with Micklethwaite in order to satisfy myself that he was not alarming us causelessly when he demanded an immediate expenditure of £22,000 on the fabric.

Then I prepared to go to Oxford: as I stood in the Hall, the postman brought a letter from the Bishop of London's secretary asking me to forward copies of my Easter-day sermon, & the Articles in the Hibbert Journal & the Contemporary Review. He also enclosed an immense protest against the same, signed by the Chairman of the Protestant Association. I took with me a copy of the parish magazine, containing the Easter sermon, and sent it to the Chaplain from Oxford.

Raleigh came into my carriage at Paddington, and we travelled to Oxford together. He is stouter, & his hair tends to whiteness; otherwise he is very well.
